Not heard of Babymetal? Then where have you been? They’re one of the most famous bands to have come out of Japan in a long time and they’re a pop mogul’s dream.
A Fusion of Genres
Babymetal are a Japanese metal idol band. Their line-up consists of three teenage girls – Suzuka Nakamoto known as “Su-metal”, Yui Mizuno who’s called “Yuimetal”, and Moa Kikuchi is “Moametal”. The concept of the group is a fusion of the metal and idol genres. The idol genre is basically manufactured groups rather than those that have come together themselves – One Direction being a good example of the idol genre.
The three teenage girls are supported by a backing group called the Kami Band. Babymetal released their debut album of the same name in February 2014. Their second album Metal Resistance was released worldwide on April 1, 2016.
The group are currently touring Europe and just played the Download Festival for the second year in a row. They’ll also be sharing a stage with Judas Priest’s Rob Halford in July. April saw them performing at Wembley Stadium , so they’ve definitely won over the hearts of the Brits.
A Serious Contender
The video for their breakthrough song Gimme Chocolate!! has generated 17m YouTube views since it was first appeared in February 2014. As strange a combination as it may seem, their 2014 album has been a serious contender in the metal world: it topped the metal charts on iTunes around the world, despite the band being signed only in Japan and their lyrics being in Japanese; the queue at their recent New York show stretched halfway around the block of 34th Street and 9th Avenue; genre giants from Slayer to Metallica to Anthrax have fallen over themselves to take photos with the girls backstage at festivals.
The girls are taking over the world, one country at a time.
